| Rescue Ranch Continues it's Work after Hurricane Katrina's
Devastation We're still continuing to work and care for refugee horses. Rescue Ranch has recovered so far thirthy-six horses. Twenty-five have been returned to their rightful owners. We have borrowed a barn to house seven injured horses. We return horses to their owners only with the proper identification. Those horses whose owners have not picked them up will remain in our care indefinitely. Thanks to HARP (Hooved Animal Rescue & Placement, Inc.), Hopeful Haven (Hopeful Haven Equine Rescue Organization, Inc.), Bluebonnet and our dear friend Jenny from Illinois. They have provided us with the means to help our fellow Equestrians as they come back into the parish. Thank God for Task Force New Mexico. The Task Force has been so helpful to everyone here. When we first returned to Rescue Ranch after Katrina we found no available drinking water. Our water had been cut off. We had to load 55 gallon drums in the back of the horse trailer and take them up the road, fill them and then take them back down to the ranch and fill our water troughs. At one point, Lori Wilson, Director of Rescue Ranch, went to the Air Guard and spoke with a Major Brady, who was wonderful. He was very understanding of our immediate need. He had a tanker ready the next morning to deliver water to the ranch. Unfortunately, there was still another problem. Before the tanker could be brought in we needed to have the road through our pasture cleared of all the fallen trees. That's where our next set of angels came into play. The Texas EquuSearch team, a mounted search and rescue team, was standing by and waiting to go on their next search mission. They came down to the Ranch with chainsaws and machetes. They cleared the whole entire road way in less than a few hours. Mike, one of the team members, was a wonderful bird dog so to speak. He pointed Lori in the right direction every time she needed something. He was quite resourceful. They hit it off right from the start. He is also a private investigator. The crew that he was with were quite remarkable. She could not believe how hard working everyone was. We can't thank them enough. The Lamar/Dixon Expo center is unbelievable. They have got to be so overwhelmed. Lori has been there several times and is amazed. She was happy to reunite people back with their horses. To see the looks on their faces was priceless. People called with desperation in their voices asking to get their animals out for them. She could not say no. The truck burned up trying to help these animals. Lori said, "I'd do it again in this situation - till I exhaust myself." Any support, or help is gratefully appreciated. |
