More than two dozen horses suffering from malnutrition and
neglect were seized from their Algiers caretaker recently after
two dead horses were found on the property, according to the
Louisiana Humane Society. Many of the horses were underweight
by several hundred pounds.
Praising the quick response and "top-notch investigation
of the NOPD and the LA/SPCA," Jeff Dorson, executive director
of the Humane Society of Louisiana, said the horses will need
40 or more bales of hay a week at almost $20 a bale pending the
investigation. Veterinary and other services expected to cost
thousands of dollars will be provided by the LA/SPCA.
A nonprofit equine rehabilitation center located in Plaquemines
Parish, the Rescue Ranch, is housing, feeding, and caring for
20 of the horses. The Rescue Ranch's Lori Wilson said all of
these horses are responding well, eating heartily, and seem to
be enjoying their life on the ranch.
To help both the Rescue Ranch and the LA/SPCA meet the anticipated
expenses without depleting their resources, the Humane Society
is coordinating a horse food drive and asking the community for
help.
Both monetary donations and in-kind contributions of Bermuda
Hay, Alfalfa Cubs and Purina Strategy Feed are welcome. Drop
off your donations at any of the Double M Feed stores in the
New Orleans area, including the Terrytown store at 543 Holmes
Blvd. Blaine Strander said the Terrytown location already has
started receiving donations.
Monetary contributions may be designated for food (Rescue Ranch)
or medical expenses (LA/SPCA). Checks may be mailed to Rescue
Ranch, P.O. Box 7112 , Belle Chasse, LA 70037 or LA/SPCA, 701
Thayer St. , New Orleans , LA 70114 .
